The Chief Buffalo Memorial Mural in Duluth, led by artist Moira Villiard, visually tells the story of a community and the descendants of Chief Buffalo, remembered as a prominent figure that led the Anishinaabe to permanent resettlement in northern Minnesota. Started in 2019, this project also features work from other artists such as Michelle Defoe (Red Cliff Ojibwe), Awanigiizhik Bruce (Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe), and Sylvia Houle (Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe). 🎨 This project is part of Art in This Present Moment, an initiative of the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation. This video features a short clip of the full 11 minute animation that was projected in downtown Duluth, MN. With images of the Grandmother moon (Nokomis), fire, earth, water, and the jingle dress dance entwined in swirling colors, the piece will explore themes of homecoming and finding connection within ourselves to Ojibwe culture, to ancestors, and to nature, no matter how far away we may sometimes feel. From an Ojibwe perspective, it is as a reminder that Nokomis is always around, an elder always ready for us to reach out and willing to hear what’s in our hearts. The piece was projected during the pandemic in a sold-out free experience at the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam in downtown Minneapolis, MN as well as downtown Duluth, MN. It was synced with a soundscape featuring music by Lyz Jaakola (Fond du Lac Band of Ojibwe) and a recorded narrative by the late Dakota/Ojibway First Nation elder Millie Richard.

Chief Buffalo was one of the greatest leaders in Ojibwe history. His story is the origin story of downtown Duluth, Minnesota. But there hasn’t been any public art or a historical monument dedicated to him within the city. Until now. One of the memorial project’s organizers, Moira (Miri) Villiard takes us on a tour of the Chief Buffalo mural.

The Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, Wisconsin, presents Rights of the Child Community Forum, an exploration of the rights that a living child has or should have in the world today. Inspired by an exhibition of paintings and digitally designed posters by artist Moira Villiard titled “Doublethink: Rights of the Child”, which will be on view in Gallery Two at The Phipps from January 21 through February 27, this free event is an opportunity for community leaders, educators, parents and guardians, and youth to come together, share perspectives, learn from one another and make connections across difference.

In conjunction with multidisciplinary artist Moira Villiard's Exhibit "Rights of the Child" Watermark Art Center will hold a panel discussion regarding the rights and policies implemented by governments that invest in child development such as health care, nutrition and stronger safeguards intended to protect children from violence and exploitation. Villiard argues that in order to recognize children as human beings beyond belonging to their parents or community, children should receive their human rights.

Thanks to Moira Villiard and crew for letting me film their progress on the Chief Buffalo Memorial Mural Project yesterday. It looks great! Born in approximately the year 1759 in La Pointe, Wisconsin, Kechewaishke (a.k.a. Chief Buffalo) was an Ojibwa leader for half a century and successfully resisted efforts by the U.S. government to move his nation away from Lake Superior. This mural project will honor his memory (and increase visits to his Wikipedia page).

In this segment of Milling Around, Brianna Rose interviews artist Moira Villiard. Moira (pronounced "Mee-Ree") grew up on the Fond du Lac Reservation in Cloquet, MN and is a Fond du Lac direct descendent of mixed settler and Indigenous heritage. She works in painting, surrealism, community-engaged and public art and recently in animation. Moira explains that the art installation honors all our relatives, human and nature based and the sacred resilience of Native women. The event is free but tickets are required.
